Handcrafted

For nearly 20 years we have been working with artisans in the Philippines to handcraft our rattan furniture. The Philippines has a long history of crafting furniture from rattan for both export and local markets.

Rattan is a naturally renewable palm that grows like a vine in the tropical regions of South East Asia. It has a solid core which gives it a wood like strength but is lighter in weight. Our artisans heat and bend thicker rattan poles and join them to form furniture frames. Thinner rattan pieces are shaped to create intricate decorative motifs used in our furniture. Strips of rattan peel are used to weave all of our chair seats right onto the frames giving them added strength. These techniques take years of practice to perfect.

Handcrafted rattan furniture can be found in our indochine, moderne maru and kaigan Collections.
