Handcrafted

For nearly 20 years we have been working with artisans in the Philippines to handcraft our rattan furniture. The Philippines has a long history of crafting furniture from rattan for both export and local markets.

Rattan is a naturally renewable palm that grows like a vine in the tropical regions of South East Asia. It has a solid core which gives it a wood like strength but is lighter in weight. Our artisans heat and bend thicker rattan poles and join them to form furniture frames. Thinner rattan pieces are shaped to create intricate decorative motifs used in our furniture. Strips of rattan peel are used to weave all of our chair seats right onto the frames giving them added strength. These techniques take years of practice to perfect.

Handcrafted rattan furniture can be found in our indochine, moderne maru and kaigan Collections.

red egg has been a sustainable furnishings council member for the last 10 years because of our desire to consider our environment in every decision we make. Moving our manufacturing from China to the U.S. has helped to decrease our carbon footprint.

The product that we import from overseas is all made of rattan, which is a rapidly renewable resource grown in Southeast Asia.

made in the usa

We are proud to say that three of our collections are locally made in High Point, NC. While our roots are in sourcing furniture in China, Japan, Korea and Philippines since the founding of red egg in 1997, it was a conscious and sustainable decision in 2005 to bring as much of our production to the USA as we could.

We bench make our double happiness and shanghai loft collections in North Carolina where we have regional raw materials and heritage in furniture craftsmanship. Bench-made furniture also gives us more flexibility to create customizable pieces and ensure that each piece is being made with the quality and care we pride ourselves in delivering to our clients.

Our chang’e lamp collection is made in a local resin factory in North Carolina that has been producing resin products here since the 1970’s.

We love our smart phones and enjoy designing on our laptops, but when it comes to building furniture, we kick it old school.

Every piece of red egg wooden furniture is bench-made to order. We work with local woodworkers and finishers who expertly craft our designs just for you. Many skilled hands touch your piece down to the final careful packing to ensure your piece meets our high standards of quality.

Bench-made pieces can be found in our Double Happiness and Shanghai Loft Collections.

our story

Carol here (aka Chief Hen). I started red egg as a way to share a cultural and design aesthetic that personally excites me. As a textile designer, I began collecting and wearing vintage Japanese kimono in college. I fell in love with the patterns and the aesthetic and couldn’t wait to spend time in Asia. In 1997, I found myself in China exploring antique furniture warehouses and had the idea to bring this furniture to the USA to sell. That’s how red egg was hatched! I wasn’t thinking about what’s on trend or what would sell. Honestly, I was just thinking about how beautiful and special these pieces were and how excited I was to share them. If other people liked them and bought them, I could get myself back to Asia to explore and buy more! The antiques business evolved. Retailers discovered me and wanted more of the pieces I found. I began buying more common vintage pieces and painting them in bright lacquer colors. red egg’s signature style, Asian inspired furniture with a twist, became clear. Fresh, fun, quirky.

Fast forward, red egg currently produces Collections of accent furniture in the USA and Philippines. Our design compass still points toward the East and we are still painting our pieces in our signature lacquer colors. We even tattoo furniture in fun patterns now! We also love collaborating with our clients to design and make special, custom pieces that we hope they will enjoy for the rest of their lives. But what still excites me is sharing the aesthetic I love, filtered through my lens, with people who appreciate it. Always evolving. Always authentic.
